James Brown
James Brown serves as host for the CBS Television Network’s NFL pre-game show, THE NFL TODAY. He also is the host of INSIDE THE NFL on Showtime. JB first joined CBS Sports in 1984, and served a decade before moving to FOX NFL SUNDAY, where he was host for 12 years.
James is a co-founder and principal of the Brown Technology Group, an information technology company, and is a founding partner of the Washington Nationals Baseball Team. In March 2009, JB joined AARP as a Community Ambassador. In this role, he will connect with AARP’s 40 million members to educate them on the importance of giving back to their communities. He has recently written his first book, an autobiography entitled, “Role of a Lifetime.” James is also an ordained minister.
For over a decade, he was a reporter/correspondent for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” and a boxing host for some of the biggest championship boxing matches in history for HBO pay-per-view.
James' numerous awards read like a laundry list. They include:
- Three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Studio Host for THE NFL TODAY (2007) and FOX NFL SUNDAY (1998, 1999).
- The 2002 recipient of the International Black Broadcasters Association’s Broadcasting Excellence Award
- 1999 Sportscaster of the Year (Studio Host) by the American Sportscaster Association.
- The Golden Mike Award (1998) by the Black Broadcasters Alliance
- Two NATAS Emmys (DC Chapter) including the Glenn Brenner Award for excellence in sportscasting (1998), and the Quarterback Club of Washington’s Sportscaster of the Year Award (1996).
- In 2005, the Director’s Award for Broadcasting from The 100 Black Men of America
- The Greater Washington Urban League’s Sam Lacy Award 2005.
- The first annual Pat Summerall Award in 2006
- In 2007 Maxwell Football Club’s Excellence in Broadcasting Award and the Dallas All Sports Association Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism, and
- Named by Sports Illustrated as television’s outstanding studio host of the decade for his work hosting “Fox NFL Sunday,” Showtime’s Inside the NFL,” and “CBS Sports’ The NFL Today.
JB's charitable efforts include:
- The Players’ Gala, featuring “The JB Awards” where NFL players are honored for their outstanding community service. This event raises $1 M annually for Special Olympics DC.
- He has also worked on behalf of Darrell Green’s Youth Life Foundation, the Neimann Pick Disease Foundation and the Marrow Foundation, among numerous other charities and foundations.
James graduated from Harvard with a degree in American Government, and in 1996 was inducted into the Harvard Hall of Fame.
He resides in Maryland with his beautiful wife Dorothy. JB’s daughter Katrina and her husband John have two daughters, Kaela and Jordyn.
